What to Engrave on a Compass: 120 Ideas That Actually Fit
September 22, 2026
The short answer: a compass lid holds about 40 characters, which is roughly six to eight words. The inner face holds about 80. That means a name and a date, a set of coordinates, or one short line — not a paragraph.
Below are ideas that fit, grouped by who you are giving it to. Every one has been counted.
The practical limits
We engrave these in our own workshop, so these numbers come from the machine rather than a guess.
| Surface | Capacity | Best used for |
|---|---|---|
| Hinged lid | 40 characters | A name, a date, coordinates, a short line |
| Inner face | 80 characters | A longer message or a quotation |
| Gnomon blade | 25 characters | Two or three words |
Spaces count. Punctuation counts.
For a husband or partner
Always find your way home. My true north. Wherever you go, I go. Come back to me. You are my direction. Every path led to you. Still choosing you. Home is wherever you are. I would find you anywhere. You found me. Where it all began — [coordinates]. Married [date].
For a father
You showed me the way. Thank you for pointing north. My first compass was you. Dad — my true north. Still following your lead. You never let me get lost.
For a retirement
A new direction. The next adventure begins. Now choose your own way. You have earned the horizon. The best is ahead. No more north. Any direction you like.
For a graduate
Go find out. Choose your own direction. The world is open now. Class of [year]. You already know the way. Begin. Onwards.
For a traveller
Not all who wander are lost. Go far, come back. The world is wide. Adventure is out there. Never stop wandering. Home — [coordinates].
For a memorial or remembrance
Until we meet again. Forever my north. Always with me. You guided me home. Still guiding me.
For a wedding or groomsmen
Thank you for standing with me. Best man, best friend. Brothers, always. Stand by me.
Coordinates and dates
Coordinates work beautifully because they are short, precise and mean nothing to anyone but the two of you. Common choices: where you met, where you proposed, where you married, the hospital where a child was born.
Both formats fit: 40.7128° N, 74.0060° W or 40°42'46"N 74°00'21"W. Send them exactly as you want them engraved.
The mistakes worth avoiding
Too many words is the single most common problem. A message that reads beautifully on screen becomes unreadable at 3mm tall. When in doubt, cut it in half.
Formal language rarely works. “With deepest gratitude for your years of service” is what a plaque says. “Thank you for the years” is what a person says.
