Why we built this
Coordinates are our most requested engraving, and the question we heard most often wasn't "can you engrave coordinates" — it was "how do I actually find them." Most people have a place in mind — where they met, where they got engaged, a childhood home — but no simple way to turn that into the precise numbers needed for engraving. This tool exists to close that gap, and it's free to use whether or not you're ordering from us.
The two formats, explained
Decimal degrees (40.7570° N, 73.9860° W) is the shorter, more modern format — what Google Maps shows by default, and the easier one to read at a glance.
Degrees, minutes, seconds (40°45'25"N 73°59'10"W) is the traditional navigational format — longer, but it has the character of an old ship's log, which suits a compass particularly well.
Neither is more correct than the other. We show both because different people prefer different things, and it costs nothing to let you choose.
What to do with the result
Once you have your coordinates, either format fits within the compass's 40-character lid limit, with room to spare for a short label if you want one. Most people prefer the coordinates alone, without explanation — that's often the point. It means everything to the two of you and nothing to anyone else who might see it.
A few places worth finding
Where you met. Where you got engaged or married. The hospital where a child was born. A childhood home. A place you return to every year. The house you're about to leave, or the one you've just moved into.
